Media reports on Frist stock sale investigation largely omit company's history of fraud

"Out of hundreds of newspaper stories on Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's (R-TN) stock sale currently under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Justice Department, only a handful have noted that, in December 2002, HCA Inc. -- the company whose stock Frist sold off before share prices dropped sharply -- agreed to pay the government $1.7 billion in fines and penalties related to 14 counts of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. HCA Inc. is the for-profit hospital chain founded by Frist's father."

And I can't find any tears to shed for them.

(you will note that I didn't say I had no prejudice toward some political parties)

I am wondering if all these terrorism alerts that have been going out today are an effort by Bush to deflect attention from his many problems? I definitely wouldn't put it past that gang of crooks to do something that low.

"Washington - The ranking Democrats on three House committees called Thursday for an outside investigator to determine why a prosecutor in Guam was demoted in 2002 after opening a criminal investigation of Jack Abramoff, the Washington lobbyist now at the center of a federal corruption investigation."

Because Justice Souter 'deceived' G.W.'s daddy, I heard G.W. swear that his pick of Mz Harriet, he would confirm that she would NOT -- he was guaranteeing -- she would NOT change her ways of thinking in the next 20-30 years.

Now, is that a good way to sell a thinking person? Why would WE want a judge who would not change over the next 20-30 years.  Good grief, when I think of some of the decisions I made 20-30 years ago, I look back and wonder where my head was at the time.

I started to put this in Quotes, but thought it belongs here instead.

I guess that shows that like in Iraq the GOP isn't very good at carrying out there plans.  I think government spending is now at an all-time high.  I think their real plan is to take as much as they can from the taxpayer and give to Bush's friends in the big corporations.

Frist subpoenaed in probe of stock sales: WPost
Quote
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has been subpoenaed to turn over personal records in an investigation into possible insider trading, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

The Securities and Exchange Commission issued the subpoena within the past two weeks, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the probe.

A spokesman for Frist, a Tennessee Republican, was not immediately available for comment.

Frist aides previously said he had been contacted by regulators but did not mention that he had received a formal request for documents, The Washington Post said.

Authorities are looking into Frist's recent sale of shares of hospital operator HCA Inc., co-founded by Frist's father and brother. The sales took place just days before HCA's stock price fell on a disappointing July 13 profit outlook.

The newspaper, citing sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Frist was expected to testify under oath about what he knew about HCA's financial standing in the weeks before the stock sales.

Frist, viewed widely as a potential 2008 presidential candidate, said last month he had no inside information about the coming profit forecast when he began taking steps in April that led to the stock sale, which was completed on July 8.

DeLay Uses Website to Attack Prosecutor

Legal experts said DeLay's use of congressional campaign donations to attack Earle likely was permitted under campaign law, though it could lead to legal questions about whether he is trying to influence potential jurors for his trial.
"He clearly is aiming at the jury pool and aiming at voters, hoping to generate as much sympathy as he can," said Larry Noble, the government's former chief election enforcement lawyer. "And it shows DeLay never misses a beat when it comes to fundraising — no matter how dark things get."
