Health Tip

Because raw foods including oysters may carry bacteria, persons with chronic liver disease, impaired immune systems or cancer should avoid eating raw oysters.

Use Alcohol for getting water out of your ears after a summer swim.  A few drops in the ear dries out the ear and helps prevent infection.

Protect your hair by wetting it with tap water before swimming.  It will absorb less salt water and chlorine, which can both be drying.

This isn't a tip, instead I have a question.  Have any of you heard about Liptor causing muscle pain?  I have been taking that since last year and it seems like the minor problem that I had with pain in my upper back has gotten much worse since then.  I have recently seen a physical therapist and he gave me some things to do that have helped, however it just doesn't seem like it is going to go away.  Anyway recently I read that liptor can cause muscle pain and can sometimes make existing muscle pain worse.  So I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience along these lines.

I do know a few people who have problems with muscle pain when taking Zocor, also a cholesterol drug, haven't heard anyone complain about Lipitor, but it would stand to reason. I know when I first started Zocor, doc gave me samples for the first month for this reason. He said he didn't want me to pay for a script that I may not be able to use. I however had no problems.

Pesoto, I have also heard that, but do not know anyone who is experiencing it.  My husband is taking Lipitor and has no problem with it.

oops if it has been too long since you have been there for him to write you a script for pain relief, you really have to go to one of the clinics and ask for help. A heating pad on the tummy with your legs elevated might give some relief.

Pesoto, the lipitor, my husband takes it without any problems that we are blaming on the med, but several people at work and their spouses had to switch to pravachol or lovastatin because the lipitor caused them a lot of muscle pain. One young woman who has high cholesterol thru heredity, would try to get up in the middle of the night and her legs would not work. She was tested for MS and it was the lipitor. She takes a different kind of cholesterol drug that works in a different way than the statins.

Oops, I have a friend who has had that problem.  Her doctor put her on a strick diet regime, no carbonated drinks, no coffee or tea, no sugar and no red meat.  She gave her a strong antibiotic and told her to control her stress level.  After about a month the cyst burst on its own last week.  She was elated that surgery wouldn't be necessary.

Yes, a cyst could lead to cancer at any age and you should see a doctor.  I am sure if you explain your situation with the doctor he will try to work with you.

when I was younger than oops I had a nasty ovarian cyst.  If I remember way back that far, I think I was told the cyst had burst but I had to have surgery anyway because of infection. They cleaned up and wedged the right ovary. This was before the girls were thought of so it didn't keep me having children. Because of the endometriosis, I took massive amts of birth control pills, from a prescription bottle of 100, and I was told to take at least 3 pills a day to prevent breakthrough.

A friend sent me this in an email today.  I checked it out on truthorfiction.com.  They said it was uproven but COULD be true so I am sharing.....

DEAR ABBY:

I recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son, using a mix that was in our pantry. He said that they tasted "funny," but ate them anyway. About 10 minutes later, he began having difficulty breathing and his lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill, had him sit on the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhaling and exhaling. My husband, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, heated up some water, and we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clear his chest and sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and his lips returned to a more normal color. We checked the date on the box of pancake mix and, to my dismay, found it was very outdated. As a reference librarian at an academic institution, I have the ability to search through many research databases. I did just that, and found an article the next day that mentioned a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakes made with outdated mix. Apparently, the mold that forms in old pancake mix can be toxic!

When we told our friends about my son's close call, we were surprised at the number of people who mentioned that they should check their own pancake mix since they don't use it often, or they had purchased it some time ago. With so many people shopping at warehouse-type stores and buying large sizes of pancake mix, I hope your readers will take the time to check the expiration date on their boxes. Also, beware of outdated cake, brownie and cookie mixes.

I don't know if it's true or not, but my dad told me about 2 weeks ago that he had heard the very same thing and told me to get rid of my old pancake mix. I don't have any here, because I'm the only one who likes pancakes, but I think I would probably get rid of it just to be on the safe side. I have seen alot of very sick people over the last few years from bad food or exposure to molds.

GA I just copied that post and sent it to my daughters. I know one of them makes pancakes about one weekend a month, not often enough to use it very quickly.  Thanks

I remember posting this before but it's been a while and doesn't hurt to remind people....

Pass the butter ~ ~ ~ ~ This is interesting.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around  for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in Trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL chole sterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life  and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

 * No flies, not even those pesky f r uit flies will go near it (that  should tell you something)

 * It does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
