For those of you who attended grade school in Danville, you need to visit the web site of Douglas school.

School link

They have added all the grade schools to the site.  It is really interesting.  If you have any information or pictures they are soliciting them for the different schools.  I sent some information in for Collett School my old alma mater.

Hiddenwildside, I have a paper from Collett School, but I'm ashamed to say I cut some pictures out of it (what can I say, I was young and foolish)  BangHead  I will look it up and see if there are some things in it you could add to the site.

GA says I cut a picture out of her Medley (I don't remember doing that).  Looks like someone should have taken the scissors away from me.    rolleyes   cheesy

All of the help of everyone has been great in bringing people to the website..  And any and all items are welcome for inclusion..  The article in yesterdays paper may have helped the site reach 107 hits today so far. I am sure that many must be new "finders" of it.
I was really surprised to find that someone in France had found it and sent word of it to others.
This coming week will be sort of difficult when i go into Douglas and take part in the salvage..  Tearing items out of a place that has been a special part of my life and will miss tremendously, but at the same time having a great feeling knowing i am saving parts of it for the future.

I think what you're doing is a wonderful thing.  It's very generous of you to put the web site up and do all the work you do for all of us to enjoy.  Thanks !

So will I Cheering cat

One of my complaints about Vermilion County and Danville history books is the lack of information on the public school system.

Hello Everyone...
I just wanted to bring everyone up to date on the salvage at Douglas which is now done...  After almost 5 weeks of being there, we were able to strip the building of about 90% of its trimwork,
about half of its doors, all of the blackboards, several light fixtures,
the staircase railings, many of the indoor transoms, shelving units,
many student desks and chairs and much more.
I also took down the school bells, the Douglas flag, the school directory, and many rooms of hardwood floors.  The schools stage
curtains i am having transformed into banners for our reunions, etc. with letters stitched on saying Douglas School 1876-2002.
Almost all of the hardwood flooring i took up has been given away
for people to put into their homes.  Some of the trim as well.
The student desks and chairs were out into homes within a week.
To the teachers of Douglas i have been giving each a section of their classroom floor, piece of their blackboard and a piece of the
entry marble.
Along with myself/Douglas Alumni Assoc., the following groups also
were involved in removing much of the items i listed at the top:
Danville Renaissance for homes in their district downtown.

Vermilion Co. Conservation Dist. removed floor and trim for the new
printshop building being built at the Bunker Hill site.

Frank Summers of Springfield removed the railings, trim and some of
the blackboards for an old Lutheran school he owns there he is restoring.  It is 2 yrs. younger than Douglas.

PACA group of Champaign who removed blackboards, trim, etc. to
sell in their store over there.

The building is now sealed down and going through abestos removal and will be demolished this coming August.

I also want to thank all of you who have been so supportive of the website on all of our former schools.

Your friend, Dennis

I wish I had been fortunate enough to have something from the old Collett school building.  I guess my memories will have to do...... wink

I think it's great that you were able to salvage all that you did and that you shared them with others and even made banners for future reunions....How cool is that!...... Cheering

Your idea for banners is great.  Now all alum can have at least a little piece of their childhood long after the physical building is gone.  I wish this same type salvage work was done on all the old buildings being demolished.  When I think of all the unique things lost to bulldozers it is so sad. I also have enjoyed checking your website regularly.  Thanks for memories of a time in many of our younger lives.
