To remove (beach) tar from fabric, first add a small amount of clear vegetable oil to disolve the tar. Blot it into a white paper towel. Then add dishwashing liquid (full strength) to the spot and run it under hot water.

To remove tar from carpet disolve spot with lighter fluid and blot (don't rub) into white paper towel or white terry towel. Alway try to aviod making the spot bigger by rubbing the tar into surrounding area.

Yeah, that is my idea too.  But I haven't hired out the cleaning of this whole big old barn in years. So my tip is close the doors to a bunch of rooms and choose one to clean when overnight guests are expected.

I am begging for tips to take food stains out of clothing. Tomato, orange juice, any kinds of food.

You all probably have self cleaning ovens and this also works for bbq grills:

to clean a dirty oven rack, you can wipe off some of the loose gunk if you want, then get a trash bag, put the dirty rack inside. Then pour a cup of ammonia into the bag. Tie securely. Put the bag outside in the sun for a few hours.  Best to open with a hose nearby. Most of the gunk will be gone from the rack, and if any remains, it will wipe off fairly easily.

Have you ever left the coffee pot on when there is just enough coffee at the bottom to cause you a headache?
Put a couple ice cubes in the pot and sprinkle in some salt. Just rotate the pot and watch the ice move around the bottom of the pot removing the stained mess at the bottom.  grin

Salt will remove wine stains, club soda will remove chocolate stains.  I have heard that pouring boiling water over citrus and tomato stains will lift them right out.  I have never tried it though........

Why is it as we move along in middle age we tend to wear nearly as much food as we eat?

When my daughter was 2 I was playing "chase" with her...well she ended up running into an open door and cutting her head open.  There was blood everywhere, including on my sweatshirt!! The ER nurse told me to go home and spray my sweatshirt with hairspray and the blood would come out when I washed the shirt...she was right!!! Now i spray hairspray on my clothes anytime I get blood on them.

Peroxide will take out many stains on whites like blood, iodine and other things I sometimes get on my nursing uniforms. I won't go in to any further detail. tongue

To clean spots on rugs and carpets, use window cleaner. It works as well as the spray-on carpet cleaners and if you buy the store brand you can get it for as little as $0.97 for a full quart bottle.
