I haven't encountered this problem for a while.  From what this article says it looks like almost one in ten drink on the job.  I imagine that if you threw in other drugs that it would be close to 15 or 20%.

Study: 7 Percent of Workers Drink on Job
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Just over 7 percent of American workers drink during the workday — mostly at lunch — and even more, 9 percent, have nursed a hangover in the workplace, according to a study.

Young, single men are tied most often to workplace-related drinking, especially managers, salespeople, restaurant workers and those in the media, according to the findings by the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions.

The results, culled from telephone interviews with 2,805 employed adults from January 2002 to June 2003, appear in the current issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol.

Lots of days it sounds good!

Last time I did that I was younger and working for the Miller Penske race team. When we went out to lunch with a big group of people we always had BEER at lunch.

I worked at a place in Danville many years ago where a guy told me that they used to always have a keg of beer at the job site.  They had to stop doing that because their lawyer said it might lead to trouble.

they have new rules at Anheuser Busch too.  used to be unlimited as far as I know and walking out to the parking lot with a 6-12 pack was a good thing. I think it has been pared down but still allowed. Breakfast and lunch maybe and on the way home! I don't know the new rules but they have been changed from the old way.

I haven't been there in years, however someone told me that on the tours at Anheuser Busch that people can now get just one beer.  I remember when some people used to go on those tours and get pretty wasted.

I remember when I first started working at Lauhoff and Mr. Lauhoff was still alive.  There were many stories from the office service girls about Mr. Lauhoff and his top executives drinking during the day.  One of my friends actually ran into him in the hallway and he spilled a drink on her.  In those days it was not frowned upon and drinking at lunch was OK.

I think at most places if you do that now you either get fired or get sent to a treatment center.

We have a new written policy about alcohol and drugs. Sad that adults have to have it spelled out.

At Grant's Farm you are still allowed two drinks in the courtyard. However they change bartenders frequently and and the last time we went there the young men with us (well over 21) had more than 2 each. We were driving so we didn't get too excited about them drinking more than 2.

Sikeston is known for it's drugs and alcohol.  When my kids were in school the teens shot vodka into oranges with a syring and then ate the oranges for lunch.  Several kids were caught with liquor in their lockers.  The punishment was never very severe because most of them were from wealthy families with political ties.  The practice continued for years.  I don't have anyone in school any more so I have no idea if it still goes on but I would almost bet it does.
